Breakfast of champions? Skip the kikiam and eat these instead!
Touted as the most important meal of the day, deciding what to have for breakfast is more than just reaching for what’s available in your fridge. Tempting as it may to go with quick (and usually fried) breakfast fixes, being healthy and powering through your day means being intentional about your food intake each morning.
The pressure to eat with mindfulness is even greater for athletes, who rely on nutrition to stay healthy and physically resilient for strenuous activities. Many athletes find that fueling their bodies with the right food each morning helps them feel more energetic, giving them the mindspace to choose better-quality lunch and dinner options for the rest of the day.
Breakfast essentially kickstarts the body’s metabolism after waking up. When athletes skip breakfast, they are forcing their bodies to run on empty after fasting overnight. Balanced nutrition is key so athletes can sustain their energy through the day, while also reaching and maintaining their goal weight. Making the right breakfast choices also means having adequate nutrition for physical repair.
For high-energy demands characteristic of professional and competitive athletes, a healthy, wholesome breakfast needs to be SOP! Meals can be portion-controlled and focused on protein for muscle recovery, mixed in with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats for energy.
Nutritionists say a healthy breakfast is made up of lean proteins, fruits, whole grains, and some vegetables. Here are five healthy, athlete-approved breakfast choices for you to consider:
Thankfully, Diet Diva’s Lean Machine program takes out the guesswork of what to have for breakfast each day. With all the buzz surrounding the keto diet, should you be jumping on the bandwagon?
Keto operates on a simple premise that eliminates one food group. It is a low- or no-carb diet and is high on protein and fat. Many studies now show that in the short-term and long-term there are many harmful effects especially when done incorrectly. These include increase cholesterol levels, higher risk for heart disease, hypoglycemia, gastrointestinal problems, kidney stones and a progressive reduction of bone mineral.
Here at Diet Diva, we continue to uphold the 3 principles of proper nutrition: balance, moderation and variety. Which is why we created GLOW which is our counterpart for the keto diet. It’s a sustainable program with a modified ratio of carbohydrates, protein and fat that helps kickstart your weight loss. It’s also gluten-free and filled with whole foods to help reduce inflammation.
We ensure you that with every meal, we provide you with food that nourishes and helps you achieve the results you want.

In celebration of World Meat-Free Day, our Nutritionist Extraordinaire and resident-Vegetarian AV Gawtee shares some reasons why it may be a good idea to cut down on meat intake.
Going on a plant-based diet has been proven to help those who want to shed the extra weight. Animal foods, especially red meat, contain higher amounts of fat, compared to other protein sources, and the body has a harder time digesting it, causing weight gain. You won’t notice right away because fat in meat is usually hidden, but consuming more of this increases calorie consumption, and you won’t just pack on the pounds, but you are at an increased risk of different diseases.
Giving up or lessening your intake of meat has many benefits especially when it comes to different diseases like diabetes, kidney stones, gallstones, heart disease and of course, cancer. Eating more fruits and veggies means more fiber and antioxidants, which fight cancer-promoting free radicals in your body. Adequate fiber intake also helps in lowering blood pressure.
Those who regularly consume red meat increase their risk of developing heart disease by 30%. On the other hand, consuming more fiber and potassium-rich veggies, grains and legumes can improve heart health, significantly reducing risks of stroke and heart attacks.
According to Dr. Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health, “[…] regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death,” Cutting out red meat can actually prolong your life by 20%!
Aside from all these numerous benefits of going meat-free, this kind of diet is also good for the environment. Animal agriculture produces more waste than emissions from all modes of transportation combined. The methane and nitrous oxide from farming animals and the waste that comes with it are much more potent greenhouse gases compared to carbon dioxide.
Go green for your health and for the environment!
